Greece Yacht Charter Qualification Requirements Change

Updated: Jan 14

If you have already booked or are planning to book your yacht charter holiday in Greece in the future, it is important that you continue to read this article.

Chartering in Greece

Authorities in Greece no longer accept Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper qualifications. It also applies to any other qualification that has daylight use limitations.

We therefore urge you to obtain The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) from your national sailing authority prior to your charter commencement. The ICC for users of pleasure craft was established under resolution No. 40 of the Working Party on Inland Water Transport for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and is an internationally recognised document. Obtaining the ICC is a straight forward process.

A little bit of bureaucracy should not stop you from enjoying this beauty

WannaGoSailng.com welcome this change. Arguably, a piece of paper does not improve your seamanship or ability to skipper a vessel but having some level of harmonisation in terms of acceptable qualifications and means of achieving same, makes us all a little bit safer, especially in busy sailing areas. The ICC is accepted by virtually all charter brokers and operators as satisfactory qualification to operate a pleasure craft. Rather than seeing this as a hindrance, more stringent qualifications lower insurance premiums and therefore cost of chartering a yacht.

The ICC can generally be obtained from RYA, ISA and other national sailing bodies. Please contact them directly for more information. Alternatively, as a fist step, you could contact your local RYA or ISA accredited sailing school who should be able to guide you on your way to the ICC.

If you are still unsure how to go about this, or where to find an accredited sailing school, please contact us and we will help in anyway we can. In the mean time, feel free to check out our Greek Offers .
